The forlorn and forgotten of the greenhouse
« on: July 17, 2012, 15:52 »
Every year I start with the best of intentions and enthusiasm, starting off as many plants as I can in the greenhouse or the cold frame, most of which make it to their final growing place on the plot.

But a critical scan of the greenhouse today revealed some hangers-on that should have been dealt with by now: Several 2" pots of chives, some geraniums still in their seed trays, the spare tomato plants still in the germination pots and a sad looking pumpkin plant drooping over the staging.

It's like this every year - there are always some plants left to linger in too-small pots, way past their best and stunted, but hangin in there. I keep watering them instead of just accepting that I don't need them or I've left it too late and should really just chuck them out -

Is it just me? Why can't I throw them on the compost heap instead of torturing them in the greenhouse?  :(  ::)  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

The strong minded should not read this - it might make them feel sick.

I feel so sorry for my extra tomatoes. They've done all the growing and blooming they can in tiny pots - it just feels mean to throw them out. In the past, I have usually given some away (though everyone is usually swimming in their own plants) or stuck them in a small patch where nothing else grows (we're talking garden rather than allotment) and let them at least have a fighting chance.  I'm always apologising too, I expect they're tired of hearing it.

Me too.  I had to give the children (aged 3 and 4) the task of putting my hugely over-germinated tomato plant supply in the compost bin because I couldn't stand to do it myself and having given away stacks on freecycle and to the allotment plant sale, we were still drowning (I had sown half used packets to see if they would germinate - they did!)

Luckily, both of them love the smell of tomato plants and think the compost bin is a thing of magic!  ;)

I'm still getting over the trauma of last weekend when I cleared my greenhouse out  :(

On the cull list  :

Outdoor bush toms that were huge in their pots, but no room inside and I was worried if I put them in the garden, they would get blight and spread it to the indoor lot. No point planting out on the allotment as signs of blight up there already on other people's stuff  ::)

Bush cukes - salvaged a couple and rigged up a polythene cloche for them

Yellow pattypans - sure I didn't plant these.  Some rotter is abandoning their spares in my greenhouse surely    Probably a plant swap earlier in the year but were spindly yellow leaved sicklies that were not up to much  ::)

At least I can get in the door now

I've got (marginally) better at this since saving my own seed, it helps me to remember that the attrition rate in nature is staggeringly high, the whole setup is designed so that only a few survive.

Not that you'd know it if you looked in my greenhouse though....

Thanks everyone for bringing a smile to my face in a bad year.  :)
