Moving strawberries
« on: July 16, 2012, 20:45 »
Strawberries have done pretty poorly this year in my raised beds. There were plenty of flowers and the fruit set but it is taking an age to ripen. The bed is sheltered by trees but this also means it does not get a ton of sunlight. So I was going to move the strawberries( about 40 plants not including runners that I will encourage into pots) to a bed that got a lot more light. When and what is the best method?

Thanks

Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

I went to weed a choked up strawberry bed which had been poorly cleared to begin with last week and ended up digging them all out, clearing the weeds, cut back the older leaves, unwanted runners and removed any rotted fruit and planting them back through wet newspaper (to slow down the weeds), I then mulched on top with a mix of manure and compost.  The bed seems fine.

At a guess, the bed contained about 30 plants in total.  Had it not been the wettest summer, I would have been wary about doing this at this time of year - but I thought what the heck!?!

In my case, the plants had finished fruiting, so I would maybe leave it until after they were finished if you hold out hope in them producing.

After they have finished producing, or use pots to root runners and locate these to the new site in spring and dispose of the older plants.
