Artichoke or Cardoon
« on: July 16, 2012, 14:19 »
Hi, wonder if anyone could identify these for me. I have tried looking online but can't decide. I was told they were artichokes but to me they look more like Cardoons. There is a big bed of them in the garden but don't know anything about them. Anyone any experience of these?

I only know that cardoons grow VERY tall!   :)

I saw some in a lady's garden once that were about 10ft tall!!!

I'm going with artichoke which also grow tall, both because of the leaves and the heads in your picture.

Both are edible though.

That looks incredibly spikey for a globe artichoke

after looking on Wiki and comparing cardoon heads with artichoke, I agree it looks more like a cardoon.

They're Cardoons. Good luck with them. I grew some a couple of years ago. It'd have taken a nuclear reactor to cook them to an edible state

How and for how long did you blanch them?

I have both for decoration only, the chokes are up to 120cm high and 15cm diameter heads while the cardoons go up 2mtrs but are only 8cm in diameter .

I'd say artichoke.  The flower bud looks to spiky for a cardoon.
