Ants in my raised bed
« on: July 16, 2012, 13:01 »
Hi, I'm growing just a few lettuce under cloches in my raised beds.  The cloches are only there to stop the birds and cats getting at them and spoiling them.  However, the ants have overrun the raised bed and are using the cloches as nests complete with the lettuce still inside!!!

Whilst they don't do any harm to the lettuce, it ain't nice having to wash the ants eggs of every single lettuce leaf before eating! Yuk....

How do I get rid of the ants in my raised bed please?  Thanks

Keeping one pest out has made it a safe haven for the ants.
You can't win .
Ant powder at the ready

One of the gardeners on the telly last week recommended leaving mint sprigs around to repell ants ( however you have to watch out that they don't root!). I want to try this as I have ants nests popping up all over my lawn. Never had a problem before so I guess the weather this year has been to their liking! :)

our allottment is overrun by red ants who eat their way through all our crops, i have gone through 10's of bottles of ant powder and have moved onto spray bottles so will give the mint a try!
the last any nest i dug up yesterday was about 5th by 2 ft and crawling with ants and millions of eggs ......by the time i left there was nothing crawling about!  :nowink:
Gained an allotment on the 19th June 08, 135ft by 40ft! eekk. Finally after 4 years it is looking like an allotment and not a jungle

We have 5 lovely hens in the garden, fish, 2 dogs and 2 canaries
