Newbie beginner Gardner - Help!

I've just recently got an allotment from the council after being on the waiting list for a few years.

l have also moved into a house with a rather large mature terraced garden - mostly trees and shrubs so just some pruning required.

The allotment is overgrown and full of all the favourite weeds like bindweed, dock and thistles,  plus some mint liberally dotted around! We have just got a brushcutter to trim down the weeds and was going to try the lasagna method; however haven't yet a chance to do much yet as its been too wet. I think it may be early September before we are ready to plant anything but have no idea what I can plant at that time of year - any ideas?
