Rusty holes in broad beans
« on: July 14, 2012, 19:08 »
I have noticed (this happens every year) small oval shaped holes with a rusty edging on the leaves my broad beans. It seems to happen more on the side shoots. They are generally better this year with some cropping but this is something that re-occurs.

Don't think its a real problem, Hubbali, they do all sorts of things before delivering the goods!

Watch out for the slugs though, they love BBs - especially if they're flopping close to the soil!

He's been having and posting about the same problem for years so he ought to know what it is by now after all the advice he has been given.

Broad bean rust happens every year, from mid-June onwards.   http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=112

Can't avoid it, except to avoid stress on the plant (no drought this year, so that's not the problem) and pinch off leaves that start to get it.   Broad beans do not like warm weather.  In a bad year, this rust gets on the bean pods and on the stems, and if you have a hot summer it will kill off the whole plant no matter what you do to try to keep it alive.
