Mildewed Gooseberries - still edible?
« on: July 14, 2012, 17:43 »
Hi,
I have a unknown variety of green gooseberries that has been badly hit by disease this year - either American Gooseberry Mildew or just plain grey mould, not sure which. My question is, are they still edible? They are not quite ripe yet, but they are late this year (isn't everything!) and are usually ready in the middle of June, but it was a bush we inherited with the plot so there's no telling what variety they are. I was really looking forward to making gosseberry and ginger jam this year! Now the weather has been a bit dryer, the grey 'fluff' that was all over the berries has disappeared, but will it have affected them? None of the books I've looked in tells you one way or the other.
Thanks

I'd give them a good wash and let them dry on some screening indoors. And then decide if they'll still make it. I might just be a bit of surface mold that will wash off, and if so, you can sieve the skins out when cooking if you wish.
