Cooking with Pentland Javlin
« on: July 13, 2012, 16:15 »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me if Pentland Javlin potatoes are any good for mashing or chips?

I'v grown them for the first time this year and my first harvest last week produced some quite large potatoes which I cut up, part boiled then roasted in garlic.

As we are not really a fan of boiled potatoes, I wondered whether they would be any good for mashing or chips.

I noticed the skins are quite thin and scrape off easily so I'm guessing you couldn't bake them whole.

Also, how long can you  leave them in the ground for?

This question is mainly about cooking so I'll move it to cooking, hopefully someone will see your other question at the end too. ;)

I should think it would be fine for chips but not for mash.  Too waxy, the mash would be lumpy. They would saute and fry well too, holding its shape ...  When I get bored with it as boiled and salad pots, I like to slice it and cook it in a Dauphinoise.  Comfort food for when salads are too .... cold!   :D

Mine have a habit of staying in the ground until the last of them come up with the second earlies in late August, but I am worrying about slug damage this year if I leave them to mature a bit more.  :(  Dont know ...  There are big beasts out there!

So midweek we harvested our second lot of pentland and par boiled them for chips.
They cooked well and looked very nice after frying.
But again i wasnt impressed by there taste.
So yes they chip well,

But i have grown maris bard for the exact purpose of summer chips  :tongue2:
And thats the end of my penland javs, Cos i will give the other 5 or so bins i am growing to my family & neighbours  ::)

Had to repost here  :tongue2:

I done pentland jav for roasties today,I boiled them a lot longer than a par boil.
And boy were they fantastic to eat,Roasted lovely and looked lovely.
I have changed my mind now about pentland

I grew maris bard for the roasting thing,And they roast tough
I am hoping the bard will come good when bigger & older
