Do hens sunbathe?
« on: July 11, 2012, 10:41 »
I have noticed this year more than ever that two of my hens will take them self off to a sunny spot (hard to find at the moment!) lay on their side with one leg out and sleep.
Not sure if I should be worried as the hen who did this constantly in the last few weeks was sadly put to sleep last week.
Is it s a sign of anything or just normal hen behaviour?
Gained an allotment on the 19th June 08, 135ft by 40ft! eekk. Finally after 4 years it is looking like an allotment and not a jungle

We have 5 lovely hens in the garden, fish, 2 dogs and 2 canaries

Im in Sw France and never noticed this with my hens - although i am not an experienced keeper. They tend to hide in the shade or bury themselves.

Like this you mean? This was a couple of months ago and she is hale and hearty....and very much the boss.

She is also very vocal as well as bossy, and has been re-named by my OH as Lady Go*****e.

Very normal behaviour :) with rubbing and dust flicking to clean the feathers.

Loving the photo, yes that is exactly what she does.
There was no dust bathing as she was on the grass, just soaking up the sun, I also think she was a little off colour as she laid a soft shelled egg for the first time in her life. She has perked up now though  :)

I have a trio of polish & they just lie down where they feel fit and sleep in the sun.

You have to step over them if it happens to be in the middle of the path.

Sidney being a frizzled polish looks like a bag of rags lying on side.
