Growing rare veg. Purple carrots anyone?
« on: July 10, 2012, 22:51 »
I'd love to amaze everyone with some weird and wonderful types of veg next year and found some cool ones on this blog

http://www.squidoo.com/Unique-Vegetable-Plants

I especially like the weird broccoli plant and the purple carrots. Anyone tried any of these?

I've grown the purple carrots before - the kids loved pulling them out of the ground, and they look pretty cool, but the flavour isn't as nice and sweet as some of the orange or yellow varieites

I agree, the purple just didn't live up to the hype. Plus, the family treated it like the elephant at the table and wouldn't eat it. Same with the Solar yellow carrots. Not surprising they went out of favour.

If you can't eat high acid toms, Hillbilly is a nice mild tomato, and a nice size too as well as prolific under the right conditions.

Agree about the purple carrots, not as nice and turn the water purple when cooking!

It sounds as though its just as well the Dutch developed the orange carrot as a tribute to King William (of Orange). ;)

I have purple cauli in at the moment, not that it is doing very much, mind you!

I'm also trying to grow a mix of yellow, purple, red,and white radishes, and also a mix of red, purple, and yellow carrots.

Though I have to say that red, purple and yellow carrots are not so much of a strange occurrence here :)

I've tried Rainbow carrots, a mix of seeds that give you carrots from white to purple, and also purple potatoes.
The carrots had a stronger flavour the darker the colour and I would grow them again.
The potatoes tasted OK but the colour put most people off.

Tried the purple carrots last year - they were Ok and a reasonable crop.  Cooked some with swede and when it was mashed  it just looked like mud on the plate,  not very appealing but certainly interesting!

I used to grow a few purple potatoes every year but the family consistently refused to eat them, and picked them out of any dish I made. Once cooked, they did look rather awful.

I grow bulls blood beets every year and they tend to make more leaf growth for salads than they do root bulb. If you're after bigger beet bulbs, Detroit is always dependable.

We have blue potatoes in this year and have grown purple carrots.  I also have yellow and purple mange tout and purple sprouts in this year.  I did grow some golden beetroot, but couldn't get the seed this year.  The main reason for this colour is the children although I like to grow stuff that isn't available in many supermarkets.  I am wondering what blue mash might be like though.

Knowing my little girl, she will have me growing purple ones next year!
