I was going to have kale.

The slugs have had other ideas
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Not too late to resow  :)

I've grown mine in pots in a coldframe laced with slug pellets as it was the only way to get it going  ::)  The ones I have planted out were quite big so are escaping the worst of the slug attacks.  Seedlings of anything are dead veg walking this year  ::)

The swedes, brussels and caulies that I started indoors died and the ones I planted direct got washed away.

Is it too late to start some more in post for over wintering?
Should I be picking a different variety?

I’m the same Becs. I have a packet of Clapton cauli seeds and I’m tempted to start some off indoors and plant out when they are ready.

I would put the need for food above any rotation plan!  The veg plot is about growing food, not serried ranks of well ordered veg.  Or is it just me

To be fair, for some of us we're not lucky enough to have a plot and the only space we have to grow is in our fairly small gardens. Even having something growing my outdoor space look a little less bare in the bleak old winters.

Mostly using the polytunnel of which will be crammed when i've finished.  Carrots in tubs to be moved to the polytunnel once the toms have gone.   Lots of salad and spring onions, pak choi and some other greens.

I'm only leaving 1 largish patch outside which is going to be crammed with  kale, cabbages, broccoli, romenesco, some turnips.  Leeks are still tiny so doubtful they'll need  to be transplanted to a final site at this rate.

The whole allotment bar one patch will be sown with green manure (various) and then further compost added on to put back nutrients that surely have been washed away from all the rain / flooding.

Definitely get some carrots in now, and you could make lettuce and rocket work well into autumn, and even later with a few cloches.

I'd poke around for more brassicas too!

Some beetroot would get going too, so, as most good people here say, chuck the rule book away and grab every chance to sow and plant - reasonably of course, I bet toms would have a hard time...!

Can anyone recommend a variety of carrot that would be good to sow now for winter picking, assuming I'm not too late.

You can sow Autumn King 2 in August.
