Ant nest in potato planter. Help!
« on: July 08, 2012, 18:24 »
Hi,

I'm new to the whole growing veg thing and I just went to pull up some potatoes for dinner and one of my 2 potato planters was full of ants and eggs and flying ants. I didn't delve too far into the potatoes to see if they had been attacked because it all seemed a bit disgusting. The other planter was fine and I have harvested all of those.

Will the ant infested planter still have edible potatoes in it or is the whole thing ruined?

Anyone had similar experiences?

Thanks!

I should think it will all be fine  :D

PS Welcome to the site  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My potato patch was riddled with ants nests this year - they don't seem to have done any damage, and when I disturbed them by digging up the potatoes, they just moved to a different location (it was quite sweet really - they all rushed around picking up their babies to move to a different place!)

If you use the old method of pouring boiling water on the ants nest you may end up with boil in the bag spuds!!

We've got the blighters in the new greenhouse...have they no respect?

Some tough gloves and a bit of courage is all that's needed, but don't ask me to come and "furtle" for your spuds - I'm a coward... :tongue2:

I have always has ants in my garden, usually in the rock garden. They do no damage and probably help to keep other pests down. If I want to dig in their area I do it as quickly as possible and watch carefully to make a sudden retreat as soon as they appear, otherwise they do give a painful nip. Must admit it is a bit difficult to treat your potato planter like this.
