Peppers in pots - how big a pot?
« on: July 06, 2012, 20:02 »
I have chilli peppers and sweet peppers in 8 inch pots (diameter across the tops), but how big a pot should these be potted into for their final size please?

That sounds like plenty. ;) We normally confine chillis to 2 litre (or 6 inch across the top) pots.

I know it is usual to keep them on the dry side to produce heat in the fruits (chillis) but I wondered about the pots running out of nutrients. I guess I could feed them in the watering. Thanks Argylie.

that sounds fine for chillis but I have my sweet peppers in bigger pots than that, the size you grow tomatoes in.

what size do you use for tomatoes? I have mine in 12 inch pots. Do you measure your pots by diameter across the top or is there a conventional sizing folks use?

I think its more reliable to describe in litre (volume) size rather than top diameter. The pot you are describing might be a different shape even if it does have a certain top diameter, and volume is a constant or a finite measurement. ;)

I've got sweet peppers in Morrisons flower buckets, 2 to a pot. I give them a drop of Miracle Grow every week or so. They look really good and have got plenty of little peppers coming.

the smaller size supermarket flower buckets hold about 7Lt.
That's what I grow my peppers in.
99p for 10 at most stores ;)

That size sounds about right. You want to stress them a little into fruiting. Once you've flowers a potash or tom feed every few weeks will help with yield.

Morrison s flower buckets come in 10litre and 5litre. I have my toms  and melons growing in the 10l and pepper Chilli & sweet in the fives, both seem happy enough.

Do you have to ask for the flower buckets in Morrisons please?
I've never seen any for sale.
Thanks.
