Spuds when to dig up?
« on: July 03, 2012, 14:46 »
I dont know when I should be digging up my spuds for eating, I have 3 different varieties, early mids and main crop, 2 of them are already in flower, what do I look for as an indication that there ready to dig up and eat?

When the foliage is pretty much dead is the time to dig them up. Flowering only indicates that the tubers are starting to size up and it'll be some weeks yet before they're ready.

Given the bad rain of this year, you might want to dig them up when you notice the first signs of die-back so that they won't rot on you.

Some don't flower, so how long ago did you plant the seed potatoes? This will help give a guide as to when to lift them.

Ok will do, thanks... but it seems the earlys are flowering the same time as the mids!! is that down to the weather? the lates seem to be doing what there meant to and still growing foliage (I'm guessing)

The terrible weather is messing up everything, so not surprising the 2 varieties are flowering at the same time.

I have first earlies and mains this year. The mains have been flowering for a couple of weeks, the earlies haven't flowered and good sized ones are being eaten already.

Have a furtle - see what's there and harvest any decent sized ones, then possibly ease the plant back into the soil for the little ones to grow on.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have nothing to lose pulling the one up anyway, I have 2 massive rows of them, 3 rows of mids, and 3 of lates anyway, even if there small I think you can still eat them cant you?
