Curled leaves on pear and plum trees
« on: July 02, 2012, 00:04 »
Hi

I Planted 2 each of morello cherry, victoria plum, conference pear and braeburn apple last

year. The cherry and apple trees have loads of fruit on them, but the pear and plum have

nothing on them, and the leaves are curled.

I cannot see any insects on them, and there has also been a lot of growth.

I don't know why there isn't any fruit.

Thanks Carl

Hi Carl - it is not unusual for pear trees to take a few years to settle in before producing a crop.  I had my conference pears for nearly 5 years - every spring there would be blossom but never any fruit, then one year there was exactly 1 pear on a tree.  Thereafter the crop size got bigger and bigger every year after that.

Now, with all the other fruit trees especially plum trees, this year has been a bit of a disaster.  We had a very early warm spring and some blossom came out earlier than usual but the bees and other pollinating insects might not have been around when needed.  When other fruit started to flower, the rain or the frost came back with a vengeance.  A lot of people even with well established trees like myself are going to have a very lean fruit year - my 10 year Victoria plum tree has about half a dozen plums on it and yet last year it was covered.

A year without fruit will do the trees a world of good - all the energy can go into roots and establishing itself and will be a better tree for it.  Good luck for next year.

One of my plums had curled leaf, and I'm hoping it was due to the dry weather in March/April...certainly new leaves are coming through without as much curling

as babyann has said trees do have resting periods where they dont produce any fruit, that combined with the unusual weather has contributed to your lack of fruit - but dont worry alot of people are having problems with thier fruit tree's this year (including me).

Im also suffering from leaf curl on my fruit trees to (but i suffer from it every year!), the cause of leaf curl on my cherry is black fly and the cause of leaf curl on my plum is aphids - which i think may be the culprit in your case (they are verry small and green, so they are hard to see!). However generally these insects (aphids and blackfly) dont affect the trees productivity!
