a random question but after reading joyfulls reply on another post I was just wondering which hens have the longest life expectancy and the shortest out of interest? Are they like dogs (mine are lol!!) and the larger the breed generally speaking the shorter their life span.

I can recall a post previously re peoples longest living hens and I was suprised. We ourselves had a 6 or 7 year old at least but couldn't be sure she wasn't older as a rescue.

pure breeds tend to have a longer life than a lot of hybrids. They also have a longer egg laying lifespan and this may also account for their longer life as their calcium stocks last longer keeping their bones in stronger condition. Meat birds don't tend to live very long as they get too big putting a strain on their hearts and joints (although most of these aren't very active).
Staffies are softer than you think.
