Are there any early pots which are more like main crops as I don't like the earthy taste! ie ones i can mash or roast.

Aww their lovely, you just have to prepare them right. Lovely with butter or salad cream, or make potato salad. Yummy

Duke Of York and Red Duke Of York are two varieties with a more floury texture I believe.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

My immediate thought would be don't grow them and leave more space for maincrops. ;)

Have you tried roasting them with a little garlic, olive oil and rosemary?
Or roasted with red onions, garlic cloves, oregano and lemon juice
Or in a curry
or roasted with butter, onion and paprika
or in a lemon, mint and mustard dressing
with sour cream ir creme fraiche
or crushed with mint and butter
or.........................

there is a most marvelous potato cookbook by Lindsey Bareham published by michael Joseph which is well worht a place  on the cookbook shelf.

if they taste earthy its because they have common scab.try a more resistant variety next year.

I par boiled and then shallow fried my swift potatoes last week - YUMMY!!!!

Although I have to confess I got more of the "new potato" flavour when I had them just lightly boiled with some butter at the weekend...

Had a poor crop so from 7 seed potatoes they were all gone on 3 meals for 2!  I am holding out more hope for the Charlottes... (fingers crossed)

Don't like them

Me and OH generally stand at the cooker eating them out the pan  :D  I think Charlotte and Arran Pilot take some beating.  Arran P can be grown on to make jacket potatoes and are very delish in that role too (the texture is soft and creamy, they're lush)  :)

I grow Epicure first earlies, basically because I too don't like the texture of most early spuds.
Epicure are a nice large fluffy dry white potato that are great baked, roasted, mashed etc etc

I buy my 'seed' with everyone else, early doors.....then chit it & plant my first couple of short rows under whatever cover I can muster, then leave the chitted seed in "egg trays" in decent light & plant a couple of short rows every few weeks up until September.  The chits stay 'stubby' & if they start to look a bit sad, I spray them with seaweed solution.  That way we get first early New Potatoes for 'salad' use all year from late May / June to Christmas.

Personally I grow Anya, for hot, cold & sauteed & chop the tops off once the Potatoes are at the size I want, they will sit quite happily in the ground for weeks....but don't wait for them to flower, because in my experience, they don't.

I don't grow any Maincrop because I don't have the space & the 25Kg sacks around us are 'cheap as chi......

Duke Of York and Red Duke Of York are two varieties with a more floury texture I believe.

I grew Duke of York last year, it's very like a main crop in texture and taste.  You can lift as a new potato or leave that bit longer.  It's on the list for next year, only reason I didn't plant it this year was I left it a little late before ordering.

I'll need to check my list for what varieties I planted this year.. but a quick furtle last night suggested that I may be disapointed this year :(

thanks some great ideas I haven't grown main crop as oh can get sacks for £4 but there is always a gap between the old ones running out and the next years. I usually buy the biggest new ones I can get and peel and mash them.

But I may need more space as the lotty is aready full with all my other veg not sure how theres only 2 of us.

need to see a doctor yes Iknow i'm a bit
