First ever feed from my allotment : )
« on: June 25, 2012, 20:52 »
I dug up one plant today and got enough pots to feed four people (Lady C).
Is this an average yield?
I do hope so because they were superb ! So much better than anything I've had from the supermarket,it's made all the hard work worthwhile.

It was a fantastic feeling eating something I've grown myself,I know most of you have been doing it for years and it's old hat to you  ::)  but for me as a first timer it was great :D
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

Well done you. It is great when you get to eat something you have grown. Fresh picked and onto the plate in minutes tastes sooooooo good.

We have only been doing this for a couple of years and recently have been disheartened  'cos of the dreadful weather and the things that have gone wrong but when I tasted the veg I harvested today I remember why we do it. The carrots tasted like no bought carrot.

You will be hooked with the spuds too. We finished our home grown ones at the beginning of May and it has been a hopeless quest to find supermarket spuds that tasted as good.

As you are enjoying home grown veg, do you keep chickens too? A really fresh egg is a beautiful thing. ;)

Even when you become an old hand it will still be great. Good for you. :D

I grew lady crystal last year and they were the most productive spud I have ever grown!  If you leave a few in they'll grow to baking tatie size too so no hurry to get them all out of the ground just yet :)

I've been growing my own for about 30 years & the feeling of wonder never goes, well not for me any way. Neither the does the frustration at the weather either so swings & roundabouts I suppose.

Thank you all for the response,it feels like I've had a big pat on the back
In reply to Mrs Ball,I've got 6 chickens and they are laying well. That is also a great feeling when you collect the fresh eggs which are also better than shop bought!

Congrats on your first veggies  :)  I'm like a kid in a sweet shop when harvesting spuds, and I've never lost the feeling.  Collecting eggs was always a joy and I always thanked the hens  :D

I can't imagine what picking asparagus must be like but I hope to find out one day.  That must be unadulterated bliss, almost as good as the eating  :)

Well done Judd,  Growing my own means I have daughter's who like veg, brussels, cabbage, carrots etc as the taste is so superior.

Compostqueen, this year is the first time for asparagus and we all loved it, I even tried some raw and it was fine - well worth the effort and wait.

Well done we had the same feeling on Saturday.  Me and the kids dug our 1st new pots and they were so excited, they said it was better than going to Thomasland!!!

I could have saved a fortune and just got them digging for the day!!  :D
