I'd be tempted to plant a row right along the South edge of a bed / beds.  That way, they will tend to spread out over the path and consume less space in the bed itself.

talking of spuds.....

Can you buy seed potatoes in small quantities? I've only ever seen them in sacks of, say, 3kg.  What if you only want to plant 3 or 6 or erm whatever?
in need of getting in the garden

Potatoes will grow anywhere but it's a matter of depth. Not so much downward, as what is upward so they can have soil/whatever pulled over them during growing season. This year I'm putting some into a sort of raised bed. The soil below is hardpan with clay above. I've just added masses of shredded leaves and chicken poop, and still more leaves between rotovating the clay. It's of nicer substance now but still not particularly deep, so I plan to add still more masses of still decaying leaf mold to 'hill up' the growing spuds which like to peek out of the soil and go green otherwise. The growth depth is there so I have to add hilling 'depth'.

With the potatoes I just planted some old store bought potatos that has started sending out shoots - will these work - I have got little plants
When covering them do you just smoosh the dirt up around the plant or do you cover the whole plant under the dirt or soil or whatever? I was going to post a picture but I can't work out how to upload them to the image gallery - oh well
