Broad beans - new sowing...
« on: June 24, 2012, 05:32 »
Again, we're trying a row of 'The Sutton' beans to go in after the new spuds are cleared this year.

Live in hope, but having new beans in September is always a perk...

Anyone else doing this?

Nope but have sown them in August to grow for the plant tops to eat as greens in the autumn - something I read in a Geoff Hamilton book I think.  Worked well so don't see why The Turrets shouldn't be bean feasting this September  :)

Absolutely News - they're marvellous stirred up for a few seconds in hot butter, and I hadn't actually considered that for this crop!

And the blackfly will have a field day!
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I do find that soapy water is a good deterrent to blackfly, and have made many ladybird houses to encourage beneficial insects so will give it a go anyway...... might just rip up the remains of my kale and stick in some beans....
