horticultural Soap for aphids-novice question
« on: June 23, 2012, 10:35 »
Spaying my greenhouse aubergines against greenfly with a vitax 2 in one  organic spray seems to be a daily activity. I have read that you can use a weak household detergent. Please can someone give me an example of something (eg a brand name would help)which works and can I just used a teaspoon of fairy liquid in a half litre of water. Being a man, I 'm not really sure what a household detergent is!

I put a tiny squirt?bare dribble in a watering canful - it's surprising how much it froths up  My brand is Morning Fresh, but it makes no difference

You may still have to spray daily when conditions favour the bugs, though.

The other alternative is just to squash them on the leaves, a bit mucky but just as effective, I think  ;)

im not sure if this site allows people to give advice on using pesticides that are homemade? - but as im not sure i will give you the answer you are looking for  .

Yes i have found household detregent to work on aphids - aphids breath through pores on their body, the soapy solution covers them and basically prevents the aphid from breathng.

And yes when it says household detergent it means soap - so fairy liquid will be fine, howver you only need a drop or two, shake the spray bottle up, them spray on the plants.

* didn't get their fast enough - but ive gone a little further in my answer than MOS so i will reply anway

Thanks, I will give fairy a try. Less smelly than the fish oils in the Vitax spray!

I also tried a little therepeutic squashing, this morning ,followed by the odd curse, as I pricked myself on the Aubergines spikes!

I have to squash some scale insects that like invading my Acer but I do this with some rubber gloves on as they are so sticky  ???  but I use ecover washing up liquid as my "household detergent" only because I just think it might be more plant friendly
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

I use a few soap flakes dissolved in warm water and it seems to work well. :-)
