Cardboard tubes around Leeks ?
« on: June 22, 2012, 23:37 »
Hi everyone.
Only just got round to putting leeks in the ground as they have taken ages to thicken up
but I've heard that you can put cardboard tubes around them, what is the benifit of this ?

A show technique is to put a piece of drainpipe over the leek instead of planting into a deep dibbed hole. This keeps the leek clean and blanched. The pipe length is gradually increased as the leek grows.

I wonder whether that would also help to prevent the leek moths getting at them? I've been wondering about putting old tights legs around them...

I would tend to go for the cardbaord tubes because the plastic tubes with the smooth inner surface seem to be a haven for snails.

Cheers,    Tony.

Tubes from loo rolls and kitchen paper are not really wide enough. Cardboard does tend to get soggy. 3 inch plastic drainpipe can be pushed into the ground and is self supporting. A few pellets down the tubes sorts out slugs and snails that move in.

I always use toilet rolls around my leeks to blanch them, I do find though that they will unroll sometimes when they get very wet but they do not restrict growth as they will split if the leek gets too big.  Sadly mine do not get that big.  :D

This would not help as far as I can see, as the moths are small and agile, and get down inside the middle to lay their eggs.

Enviromesh is a way forward if the moths are a big problem
