Soft fruit varieties
« on: June 21, 2012, 10:36 »
I have just acquired a brand new allotment.  I am planning to grow lots of soft fruit and want to plant bare roots in the autumn.  It is nice loamy soil but as a new plot has lots of couch grass to dig out first.  We live in the east midlands.

I would like to know which varieties of raspberries (summer and autumn), black, white and redcurrants and gooseberries you would recommend, flavour is probably more important than yield though I would like to make it worth my while.

Also any supplier recommendations would be most welcome.

Hi and welcome  :)

I only grow Autumn Bliss raspberries but can recommend them.  Big lush fruits from August onwards and very easy care.

I've got a few gooseberries, but by far the most productive is good old Invicta which gives loads of fruit for cooking.  For dessert ones I grow Pax and that's very good and spine free, unlike the Invicta which has to be approached with caution  :)

One point I'm reluctant to bring up is, how much of your valuable crop are you liable to 'lose' to the borrowers?  One thing you must always consider when you have an allotment.

I should say "Ben Sarek" is a good blackcurrant "Ribes Rubrum Red" a good redcurrant and (just to confuse) "Bramble" is a good blackberry

Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
