Amsterdam carrots no root, plenty of tops.
« on: June 20, 2012, 22:52 »
I planted some Amsterdam carrots in a deep container in the greenhouse a few months ago. The packet says harvest from May onwards. It is now well into June and I have plenty of healthy, green tops but nothing formed at the root  :(

Can anyone shed any light on this ?

It's happened to me before and with Amsterdam forcing. They looked fabulous but zilch underneath all that lovely foliage.  I have no idea what caused it. Mine were outside

That doesn't make sense. Carrots are genetically programmed to grow roots. The only year I manage to keep the slugs off them and this happens. I am just not meant to grow carrots. There are unknown forces at work  :(

Two things come to mind: The soil is perhaps too rich (especially in nitrogen) and maybe too much watering?
I grow all my carrots in pots, and I reuse the soil that has grown the early potatoes. I do add a handful of poultry manure, and only water them when they show wilting.
I have grown 'early nantes' There is a lot of folliage but some of the roots are as thick as my finger and ready for thinning out.

They are in normal compost and I keep them watered as normal as anything. I don't want to risk them wilting as they may never recover. Besides, surely the root needs plenty of water to develop.

Mine aren't doing anything yet.  It has been rather cold.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I suppose it won't do any harm to just leave them. Just dissapointed as the packet says you get a very early crop.

I also only tend to water when the first signs of wilting appears, from memory if you limit watering then it encourages the root to delve deeper looking for moisture.

I have not watered as suggested but they are still very tiny and hardly worth pulling. Not very long despite the deep compost   :(
