Hybrid Lifespan
« on: June 20, 2012, 13:20 »
From the bits and bats of research I've done, cant seem to get a definitive answer...is there an average lifespan for hybrids...would just like some idea....I have dogs, cats and fish, and know how many years i might get out of them, but cant seem to find a figure for my girls.
Thanks in advance.

About as long as a piece of string!

I think it varies from breed to breed.  I got some Black Rocks as they are meant to be really hardy and can live to 4 or even 8 (think I have read that somewhere).  Others seem to only last a couple of years.   :)

I know someone who has Hybrid Chickens that are 8 years old! He always says its down to having lots of space for them to play and a good diet. I think thats the same of anything really.

Not a very helpful answer really, but maybe that might give you an idea of what kind of age they can live untill in the best scenario.

Hybrids hens were only developed to last for a less than 2 year laying life, so after that, their egg supply dwindles very quickly, but as the others have said, lifestyle and the health of the individual hen varies a lot.

I have seen photo's of an 11 year old black rock hen, but I doubt she is still laying, then you'll get a hen that has a heart attack very young and dies instantly.

On average, 3-4 years, but they only have the one supply of eggs inside them, once they've gone, no more eggies!!
