Shallots bolting
« on: June 18, 2012, 22:34 »
Do I treat bolting shallots as I've been told treat my bolting onions?  (ie pull them immediately & use quickly)
Toiling through 100sq metres of clay - And I don't actually eat much veg!

When they did that last year, I just snapped off the seed head soon as they appeared and the shallots lasted ages. Had to do it again this year and expect they'll last as well. doesn't work for regular onions which need to be used first.

Thanks Trillium!

Pickling should still be do-able then :)

Shallot seeds are expensive!

If I'm lucky enough to have one or two go to seed I'll let it and harvest the seed for next year!

Good reminder.  I've been so focussed on learning to grow I haven't had the time (or spare brainpower), to start thinking about things like that. Or even how to store or prepare my veg

Do seeds saved from bolted shallots produce decent shallots?

hi salmo, the problem is if you harvest seeds from an early bolting shallot, the plants that will be produced from its seeds have a high chance of bolting early.

so to to answer your question - yes in theory they will produce shallots, but if you are wanting to save seed from shallots, your best with doing it with the later bolting ones  ;)

i hope that made sense?

They were exactly my thoughts Matt. I was wondering if anyone had actually done it.

Some shallots must have been grown for generations from saved sets. I wonder how new varieties are created. There must be conditions where even the most non bolters can be made to bolt and produce flowers.

Bolting is only prematurely going to seed, or going to seed when WE don't want them to. I would have thought that any plant given time and the right conditions would go to seed, after all that is what they are programmed to do.
I guess the exceptions to this are plants that have been grown which are sterile, but these have been modified (interfered with for many reasons) by man.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.
