Chickweed amongst the onions.
« on: June 17, 2012, 21:22 »
Every year my onion bed gets covered in chickweed. With the rotation, it's a different bed each year, and yet it only seems to grow amongst the onion sets.
I spend a couple of hours ripping it all out and then within about ten days it's back again.

Is there any reason why I only get it on the onion bed?

I assume it is your plot's annual weed of choice   ::)

Mine is speedwell.

I very often lay down wetted newspaper, top with HM compost and then cut small cuts into the paper and plant setts straight in.  the paper will keep the weeds down a little, but to be honest, you are always going to get annual seeds reseeding into the surface.

On the bright side, chickweed is edible.  :D

So are you saying that you get it infesting a different bed every year?   ??? Never heard of intelligent weeds before. I wish my chickweed would be more selective about whereabouts in the plot it chooses to infest!
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

Just pull it from it's root and leave it where it has grown as a mulch.

Of course - you can eat it
