« on: June 14, 2012, 15:43 »
Goldie (mum) has left the chicks to there own accord now at what age do they go into the main hutch as I've still got them in the rabbit hutch they trot off in there in there at the end of the day  mum has gone back in main hutch on her own. They seam happy enough should I put a perch in for them?

Minnie sort of left Georgie to her own devices at 6 weeks but Georgie stays close anyway and both went into main coop at 5 weeks of their own accord. I was worried about her on her own but she is part of that small group already. It does make feeding more of a headache though, making sure she eats at least some growers.  Mo and family have not been out and about yet although in full view of others. There are 4 of them and a bit more of a lively bunch than Minnie's chick was. Will be interesting to see what they do. If your chicks go to their own bed it makes it easier to give them their own food!

Both of my broodies decided at 8 weeks that they had enough of being Mums.  I put them in a spare coop with small run as they both started laying again so easier to feed layers pellets.

The chicks are managing fine on their own and I have opened the door between the two groups of chicks so they mingle more.  They are sleeping on top of their hutch and some outdoor roost bars but the weather has been good.  Sure they will take cover tomorrow as it is forecast to rain a lot.  :(

I let them all out to freerange as much as possible.  Really funny to watch, 2 Broody bantams, 11 bantam chicks and 6 normal size hens.  They mingle, peck, chase and also ignore each other.  None have been bullied yet but they all have their own space so that might be why.   :)

I think it would be a good idea to put in a perch and see what happens.  If they haven't followed mother and she has lost interest I would wait until the chicks are close to full size before letting them join the adult flock so that they can stand up to bullying.
