Hens stopped laying !!
« on: June 13, 2012, 17:33 »
I have had 7 Hens since October & they have been regular layers throughout winter & spring getting between 5 & 7 eggs a day from them . However over the last  4 days or so I have only had 1 0r 2 eggs a day .     Any reasons for this ?

This can happen if something has frightened them but can happen anyway for no obvious reason. You just need to be patient and they will start again when they are ready. They only have so many eggs to lay so it does mean that they should lay for longer. :)

Snap, mine have done the same. We wondered if it was something to do with the weather as it hasn't stopped raining?
Gained an allotment on the 19th June 08, 135ft by 40ft! eekk. Finally after 4 years it is looking like an allotment and not a jungle

We have 5 lovely hens in the garden, fish, 2 dogs and 2 canaries

Someone has just suggested to me that it might be that as the Hens are in a wooded area there maybe not enough sunlight getting to them through the trees now they're in full leaf.

Could that be so . ?

I think that it would have to be really dark for them to stop laying.  They do need sunlight though to keep healthy so make sure that there are areas where the sunlight can get to the ground.  You might need to keep an eye out for damp problems in the bad weather as hens and mould spores are not a good combination.

I have a couple of hens that did not molt in the winter but are having a partial molt now and egg production has gone down.  Could this be the case with your hens?
