Lunar growing
« on: June 12, 2012, 22:20 »
Hi, does anyone have any info reference growing by the moon cycle.  I am interested in finding out anything about this, and would appreciate any feedback. Are there any books that can be recommended regarding this subject, preferably 'idiot guides' as opposed to majorly technical
many thanks

Beware this subject!

Very controversial usually. I opened a thread about it a while ago. Will try and find it for you.

Some believe (like me and a lot of Italians!!) others poo-poo the subject.
I was actually sent a lunar calendar with my last Seeds of Italy order which was very nice of them.

Basically, if it grows up out of the ground you plant during the waxing moon.
If it grows beneath the ground you grow it during the waning moon.

In this country 'weather permitting' needs to be added

and planting by the moon doesn't mean planting at night! - before all the old jokes start  :nowink: It means planting at the right time of the lunar calendar, rather than by the normal (sun) calendar.

I think this site explains it all quite well  ;)
http://www.the-gardeners-calendar.co.uk/MoonPlanting.asp

I was given Gardening & Planting by the Moon 2012 book and that also explains it well and contains a gardening diary with all the planting days in, and what veg are for which days.
It is obviously published every year, but I know our library has a couple of old ones, so perhaps it's worth having a look in your library. Then you can see if you think it's worth buying and having a try

If you use the "search" facility of the forum using the words "moon planting" you should get 3-4 pages of relevant results.  ;)

And I'm not shouting either (in fact I'm saying now't!)

As with any alternative approach, there are always members who swear by it, thos wh are interested and those who think it is tosh

We do try to ensure all views can be expressed politely and courteously. I don't think that's shouting ....... at least I hope not!  :D

To borrow your catchphrase Sunny 'If it werks for you' stick with it whether it be planting by the moon or whatever.  No harm in trying AuntieFifi and then you can let us all know how you did  :)

I'm thinking of writing an alternative book - planting by the wind and hight tide on the plot.  Do you think it will catch on

Failing that I'm joining Lacewing, chucking the usual veg out and trying rice this year  :nowink:

Very informative and hilarous, thanks guys, will not worry about buying batteries for the torch then  :D.

Also am thinking rice may be a great option this year.

Will try a few bits and see how I fare.

Off to check out page thirty and then maybe the library

Who'd have thought it!
The UK - a country of padi fields!!

I don't have room for rice.
Also my plot is on the top of the hill so water rains quite well from it. :tongue2:
