Bizarre patches on potato leaves
« on: June 11, 2012, 17:42 »
Does anyone have any experience of black-coloured marks appearing on their potato leaves (first earlies - Swift and Rocket) - it doesn't look like the pics of blight, as they're really regular, like a little pattern between the veins. On some of the other plants nearby, the leaves are curling up and the plant looks like it's stopped growing. (Wish I could post photos, but due to an incident involving 2-year-old hands, the camera is currently out of action...)

See the photos and links in this thread.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh, yes, that looks a bit like it. Any idea of how to remedy? I've seen mention of Epsom Salts - is that something I buy at the garden centre? Sprinkle it on the soil? Make into a solution and spray...?

i have this on my swifts, there was planted on good friday and checking last wek we noticed a brown sort of gold spots on the leaves...

After posting on here i thought it could be lack of magnesium but  then i noticed we had rust on out garlic as well..

So we put it down to either lack of magnesium or rust!!  Either way for the swift they will be out soon and we gave a dose of epsom salts in the watering can and also sprayed the leaves..

hope that helps!  but this weather has been crazy this year!!

I bought some Epsom salt from the chemist today  200g tub for £1.25. I have read that a cup to a gallon of water and you can mix it to soil for new plants. So I read not sure how accurate. It does not seem harmful at all as the soil does not retain it like other minerals.

My peppers look a bit yellowish. I exposed them to the sun a bit early so I am not sure if they lack Magnesium or a bit weather damaged. I think I will blast the tomatoes too as they dont seem as green as I think they should be.

Then after gardening a nice soak in them  :)

It's usually 20g of Epsom salts per litre of water  :)

I'm not doubting that its magnesium deficiancy but my Swift have done exactly the same, mine are planted beside of my Sarpo Mira and they seem fine.

well after giving magnesium and nothing happening to my swift potatoes, i am sure that it isnt magnesium deffiency now.

On closer inspection tonight of the leaves i notcied a brown bronze spots on the leaves, now i feel this is lack of patassium?

So i put sulphate of potash and watered it in tonight! So lets see how it looks!!

cheers dave

I applied a foliar drench of epsom salts today - does anyone know roughly how long it takes for this to take effect?

You should see the effect in about 10 days. The plants will green up generallly. Unless you leave a patch untreated you will not know if it is the magnesium or it would have greened up anyway.

20g per litre is 3 tablespoons per gallon. Some say add a little washing up liquid.

Nowhere seems to say how much to put on to the plants? I do not think it is critical. Just wet the leaves.

Do not apply in strong sunlight as you may scorch the leaves.

Thanks for that - I've given them a little extra boost today with some seaweed extract to see if that will help too.

''Do not apply in strong sunlight''.............if only...........sigh........

I did my tomatoes, peppers, bedding plants and lawn in epsom salt on Tuesday and already everything appears greener. So hopefully they will become a little stronger.
