Leghorns
« on: June 11, 2012, 16:24 »
I have had my 4 Leghorn hens & 1 cockerel for about 8 weeks - so a novice chook keeper but already addicted.  I frequently read all your posts and am learning a lot from you all.  I am not sure if it is my imagination but all sorts of breeds get mentioned but not often Leghorns.  Are they not so common or do all Leghorn owners not put posts on the forum.  Apologies if this post is in the wrong section - I was not sure.

I have 2 leghorns in my little mixed flock and I love them.  :D

They are great layers of goodsized eggs although are a bit flighty.

And I do put posts here. ;)

We had a white leghorn until last autumn and she laid a big white egg most days of her 3 years bless her.  Unfortunately she developed a massive prolapse, possibly due to all the large eggs.  She was a very friendly girl.

Leghorns are a pure breed and some chicken keepers prefer the hybrids.
I have 2 White Stars that are a Leghorn cross and would thoroughly recommend them; consistent large white eggs and real character...inquisitive and cheeky. They're pretty agile too because they're lighter boned and a little more "neurotic" so people call them "flighty".
I love the breed.

I have 2 white leghorn bantams - only had them for a week and they are fantastic little things.
Being new to the game am struggling with a few aspects of care and am probably worrying unnecessarily but I love them to bits!

thanks for your replies fellow leghorn owners.  My brood is now down to 3.  1 hen died & due to a noise complaint I had to rehome the rather handsom Eric, but I have to say that my remaining 3 girls seem to be happier for it.  cheers
