What about leeks? Can all types be overwintered? I have some King Richard seeds which I was thinking of planting in modules so that I can pop them in late summer once I have cleared the chard. I was hoping to harvest through winter. Will this work? I haven't grown leeks before as I have never had enough space.

it depends on the variety as some leeks are more winter hardy than others.

Looks to me as if they are not as hardy as some other varieties - don't expect full-sized leeks as you are rather late to be sowing now.

Link to some information about King Richard.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Since the plan is to over winter the leeks in a raised bed maybe I should keep these seeds for next spring and buy a more suitable variety.

Has any one any suggestions?

I am also intending to overwinter kale, Purslane, Komatzuna and Oriental mustard.

I have no experience of growing King Richard but they are described as "very early" which I take to mean they are quicker to mature than some other varieties.

That could make them a good choice to grow at this late stage even if they don't stand through the winter (my experience of leeks so far is that nearly all the growth takes place in the first year - the second year they put most of their energy into running to seed.)

I had good success last year with Bleu de Solaise, which is very hardy and over wintered nicely. But even with this variety I started this off in spring.  They are waiting in deep pots and are currently biro refill+ size. I will plant them out in the space vacated by early potatoes.  To be honest, I think it is a bit late for this year.  You could treat them as mini leeks and not expect them to get to full size.

I agree, it's too late for normal leeks but what does the packet say?
Also....I notice you're wanting to pull up your chard. Is it last years or did you sow it this year? Chard will stay in over Winter and give you another crop next Spring. If it's bolting cut it right back and it will regrow.

It really is too late for leek seed sowing, but there is always the option of buying in some young plants if you still want to grow some
