Blue Peas Anyone!
« on: June 08, 2012, 20:42 »
Just got myself some blues from a friend in their pod from last years harvest. Would I be wise to soak them and try to germinate for a few days ir directly plant them in the ground. Haven't got many pods to select from just wondering what would be best practice. I understand they have a lovely flower when growing and the pod is a bluey/ black colour. :)

I would seriously be thinking about not sowing them this year at all as you don't have many of them and wait until next.

Whilst you could get a good crop - there is certainly time for it - they would be more prone to pea moth and mildew.

If you do decide to go ahead, I'd be tempted to sow individually in small pots where you can take care of them and then transplant them.

If you like blue peas and haven't seen it before, check out this thread:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi greengiant152 - i cant realy add anything more to what DD has said, other than your variety of pea is most likely called Blauswchokker. ;)

There are quite a few other blue/purple varieties as well, I found about 5 when I was having a Google the other day, and not all marrowfat peas.
They all looked very pretty though ;) exciting isn't it  :D

With purple pods?
i know there are purple mange-tout but Blauschokker's the only variety of pea that i know of that has purple pods.

There's the Kent Blue that DD's growing - also Clarkes Beltony Blue (which I'm growing), Purple Podded, Curruthers Purple Podded, a tall Victorian Purple Podded and Desiree as well as the Blauschokker which is also known as Capucijners.

There's bound to be more out there  :D

Well that's another one to the long list above!!

The Clarkes Beltony Blues and the Purple Podded I am growing this year looks really good right now - lots of pretty flowers, with lots of gorgeously coloured pods growing too  :D
