I cut mine if they go to seed!!

that way the plant goes to making a strong bulb and not a seed!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, well that is all a great help as I have just returned from the lotty with all those symptoms on the garlic.

And I wondered what garlic scapes were, so now I know. :D :D

Was going to rip them all out but will leave them be.

Glad I checked here first. :D

Well you learn something new everyday. Will be looking out for some scapes on the garlic. Ta. :)

Can you do the same with onions?

Don't know whether onion seed heads are edible, but in any event they should be removed as soon as they are seen (although even that's too late really!)

Garlic scapes are an alternative way the plants can reproduce themselves because they don't produce viable seeds - mature scapes contain tiny garlic bulbils, but for eating they should be removed when young (they should be removed whether you eat them or not to concentrate the plant's energy on bulb growth.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Ooooops. Better dig up some of my overwintering onions then. Spotted a couple of seed head forming.

Or rather I will when this blasted rain stops. With everything I needed to catch up on the plot yesterday that was the one job I didn't get round to.

Very interesting information about the garlic scapes. Didn't know that JayG.
Thanks. :)

I've definitely got rusty garlic! Apart from the rusty bits the plants are looking quite big and healthy so hoping they'll be OK....

Don't dig them up before they die down!

(Just remove the seed head - the plant will continue to grow, although the bulb won't keep well.)

Just found rust on one of my garlic beds.
I planted it in two locations one a single row and the other in a three row block.
The single row is fifteen feet away from the block and has no rust at all. Could this be better air circulation that has kept them rust free, just a thought anyone else had similar?

Mine are planted in a block and are the worse ever!  I thought they might escape as they are in a really sheltered location compared with last year's crop but I guess the weather has simply encouraged the garlic rust.
