Another spud problem!
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:47 »
Hi all! Hope you are all well, We had frost nip at our Charlottes a month or so ago, they seemed to recover quite well, but some of them look a bit ropey now. I dug up a couple and the tubers look fine, if a bit small, there is something wrong with these spuds of that I am sure. Also they have what I think is Leaf Beetle, (they look like yellow and black ladybirds). Any ideas if we have a big problem or am I overreacting. Thanks Ian

Referring to my 'Bible',  Geoff Hamilton's Gardener's World Practical Gardening Course.

It looks like potassium deficiency, "Fruits are poorly coloured and potatoes turn black when cooked."   I would give them a dose of potash and

"Call me in the morning" ! ! !

Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Thanks "in the morning" but I'd rather call you Tony! :tongue2:  Looks like the problem, My comfrey tea isn't ready yet anything off the shelf I could chuck on them? Strange thing is it's only one small bed, all our other spuds (and everything else for that matter) are fine. We grew caullies in this bed last year, manured it in January. Daft question time now, could the seed be at fault at all, just a thought as we bought them off a market stall

Thanks Ian

You can buy the cheapest and the most expensive seed spuds around, but if the required nutrients are not in the soil in sufficient quantity, the outcome will still be the same.

Cheers,     Tony.
