Do hens have 40 winks in the daytime?
« on: June 07, 2012, 07:25 »
I have two ex-bats that I've had for a year, neither lay eggs anymore.  One of them has been on Metacam anti-inflammatory for 10 days for tumours, and I need to let the vet know how she's doing.  (The vet doesn't think she needs to be put down yet).

She seems absolutely fine, except a couple of times she had a nap in the daytime.  One time it was the full head under the feathers sleep.   They also appear to like a lie-in, as it's gone 7am now, and the two of them are just considering coming out of the henhouse.

Do hens get lazier as they get older?

My old red hen (she is about six now) loves to have a nap during the day especially if it is sunny. She burrows her way under the hen house or finds a nice deep hold in the soil and just dreams away a couple of house. Most hens are the same - especially on a warm day - they will find a nice shady corner and enjoy a 'hen' nap. My ducks have even been known to take a nap while floating on their pond.

Yup, and at this time of year the days are very long - too long for tearing about non-stop.

Mine likes to groom on top of a dirt and grit filled plant pot and when she's done she sits down, head tucked in and looks like a white frothy souffle!
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

My chicks (8 weeks) tuck their heads in and sleep often during the day, must be causing so much mischief they need to recharge the batteries.
