NEW POTATOES
« on: June 06, 2012, 22:10 »
Hi All
I have been to my plot today and the foliage on two or three of my charlotte potatoe plants have gone light green and look like they are dying?  I tested one and cleared some of the mud away and found that the stem was rotting away, so I pulled one up which came out quite easy without any pulling at all and then dug down to find that the seed potatoe was rotted... Does any one know what this is and as the new potatoes are in a new raised bed on their own does it mean I may lose the lot???
Very concerned :(

Any blackening of the stem? If so, it could be blackleg: http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=223 though Charlottes are supposed to be resistant to it

Several members have said that they have had probelems with seed potatoes rotting in the soil due to water logging.

Possibly that could be the issue with your charlottes.

Thanks all, you may be right, I hope so.  I went up tonight and the soil is so sodden it is unbelievable.  The sweet corn may suffer also the french beans that have been put out. we will see?

Denny
