Does anyone know what this plant is?
« on: June 05, 2012, 18:23 »
I got my new allotment the beginning of April and am in the process of clearing the weeds etc from it.

There are 3 or 4 of these plants, planted in a row across a section of the allotment, two of them have pieces of wood by them, as if the wood was put there as a marker of some sort.

Does anyone know what they are?  I have dug the grass out from around this one, is it worth saving it?  (I'm hoping its a fruit bush of some sort!)

Looks like you have flowers, I would let them fruit and see if they are worth keeping.

Actually I am not sure about thorns now I think about it, although I think it doesnt have any.

They are all quite little bushes, would someone have planted brambles?
Good idea tho, I will leave them and see what they do.  :)

Thornless blackberries maybe... yes, someone could have planted those

Might be thornless logan berries, although ours have more reddish stems than these ones

Who cleared your allotment? They look like thornless blackberries to me but I would have expected there to be last year's growth on them because they fruit on last year's growth not this year's. If they're in a line, I would suggest they're deliberate - keep them and support them perhaps?

Looks just like my thornless blackberry I have sat in a pot waiting to be planted into a border.  Want a picture?

I am in the process of clearing the allotment myself.

Been digging up the weeds either end, the really grassy / weedy middle section I am digging over.  Have covered over part of it with plastic & old carpet to try to stop the weeds getting any worse before I can get to them  :)

Edited to add: @rcf100 Meant to say yes please to a pic!
I would like to see.

It does look kind of like a loganberry, but I didn't think they came as small as that. Mine's gone up about 8 foot then doubled over and back down to the ground again :)

There's lots of similar blackberry hybrids though, so maybe it's one of the others.

Nothing to do with the Blackberry, but get rid of the old carpet.  It will give you more problems than its worth, believe me!  :(

I transplanted my blackberry last autumn, and I have lots of plants coming up where the plant used to be, so I am leaving them and will dig them up and transplant them again in the autumn.
My blackberry fruited all through the summer, just a few ripening at a time, so I froze them and eventually had a blackberry pie, delicious.
I must say though, I was sold a´ raspberry´ plant, not a blackberry plant! The fuit was good, so never mind
