Adding chicks to a broody hen?
« on: June 05, 2012, 18:02 »
We have a broody hen with one chick and 3 eggs that are doing nothing, and 2 chicks rejected by their mum, one 1 day old and the other hatched today.

Does anyone have experience of adding chicks to a broody hen? She is a Pekin bantam btw

I have done it several times with great success. Simply slide a chick under with one hand and then with the other remove the egg, repeat until no eggs/chicks are left. If you do this in the afternoon simply shut the hen and chicks up and leave them until the following morning.
Why do you think the other eggs aren't doing anything? Mum will normally be able to feel movement in the eggs and stay sitting on them until they hatch.
Staffies are softer than you think.

We added the chicks this morning and all is well, mum accepted them.  :)

The eggs feel very light, I have put them into the incubator just as a precation. We also removed 3 eggs from another of the pekins, they were seeping and smelly!  >:(
