runt runners?
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:36 »
Mornin' fellow veggonauts
I planted out my runners about 10 days ago when the weather warmed up. They'd been grown from seed and were a bit on the spindly side - (seedlings had got a bit ahead of themselves as I had planted too early). First time of growing, so hoped for the best and put them in the ground. The variety is Polestar. Leaves are yellowy with reddish edges, but spaced far apart. They are climbing the poles and are about half way up. My dad's plants bought from the garden centre generally look a lot healthier. Will mine amount to anything? I planted seeds as "back-ups" at the base of three of the poles. Is there anything else I can or need to do to give the plants some oomph, or will they be OK? I dug some well rotted chicken manure into the base of the planting holes, but haven't done anything else to enrich the soil so far.

I'd pinch out the tops - the new growth should then come through healthier looking, and with more side-shoots :)

Hi mumofstig - so I don't need to wait till the plants have reached the top of the poles to pinch out the tops? That's great, many thanks.

I'd do that too.  You re rather ahead having them halfway up the poles.  Mine are only 6 inches so plenty of time for them to produce new shoots
