fruit trees fertiliser
« on: June 04, 2012, 21:25 »
I planted fruit trees on the plot in October and put some bonemeal in the hole. Do I need to put any fertiliser on them throughout the year? I bought the tree's online and think they are just a year old, apple, pear, plum and cherry.

Thanks

Keep grass away from the stems and mulch with some very well rotted horse muck is all they should need.  It's all I give mine.     Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

if they are only 1 year old i shouldn't think will need anymore feed for a few years - i only started to feed mine when they started to produce fruit (from year 4/5 +)

I too just put well rotted manure around my trees every fall or early spring, depending on when my supply arrives. A dusting of lime will also help to counteract any acidity from the manure but don't add at the same time as the manure. The real key is to make sure they get enough water if the rain has been avoiding your area. Once they're a few years old, you can stop watering and perhaps just mulch heavily to retain moisture.
