too late for onions?
« on: June 04, 2012, 08:10 »
I have only managed to put in half my onions this year (which I did back in March), is it too late to put anymore sets in?

Probably, but you have nothing to lose as the set's will not keep.

They won't bulk up in time, probably, but you could use them as spring onions.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've planted in mid May and that's all I got then! Don't hope for much, then you won't be disappointed!

Onions, it is said, start bulking up after the longest day, that's only 17 days away. They need to put down a good root system and put on some leaf before then, so as you can see, time is running out!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I thought I would rely on over wintered Japanese onions this year, along with some sown from seed. A bit of a mistake as many failed.  I have resorted to planting some Sturon sets that were reduced in Wilkinsons (37 pence) to fill in the gaps.   They went in on 22nd of May.  Pleased to report that they have taken well with lots of green shoots.  Worth a small experiment if you get them in now I think.  As DD says, if you don't expect a lot, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Don't rely on over-winter onions as your main crop. Failures aside they are not good for long term storing.

My over wintering crop is poor this year, but looking around i see that others crops are similar - many have gone to seed. This probably means that next year will be a fabulous year for onions.  :lol:I believe you can't make reliable decisions based on the previous years crop - the biggest variable, the weather, will always outwit you (well me anyway).

I didnt bother last year for the the first time as i was fed up with them, particularly the red.

Having said that the ones put in early spring some are already trying to flower so suspect its going to be another pants year for onions for me.
