What to make that is easy and ¨British¨
« on: June 01, 2012, 14:20 »
The end of term is approaching for the Spanish class, we have a get together at the end of the month.  Last year I took along meringues (very popular)  I was talked about around the town it seems   Any suggestions as to what I can take along this time?  There are about 100 folk there, so something I can make  that will go a long way! Preferably finger food and sweet, as there was loads of savoury food last year and not a lot of sweet.

Custard tarts (my favourite), or if you can find the curd, Yorkshire curd tarts.  Apple crumble and or pie.  Not really finger food but there is nothing more British than
SPOTTED DICK

Cheers,    Tony.

I was going to say Devon cream scones and remembered you can't get the cream. OOOPS

You could still do the scones with jam. DId you say you could get creme fraiche that would do or mascapone cheese.

How about summer pudding done in loaf tins served with creme fraiche.

Or all butter shortbread pastry tartlets filled with mascapone mixed with a mascapone, vanilla and a little sugar topped with strawberries or raspberries.

Now bread pudding is a good idea, we always have left over bread!!
are out, I can´t make them to save my life.... I made some to take to a neighbours get together and they commented on how nice the biscuits were.... that is how much they raised up!

I might have a go at a custard tart, I have mini cake tin that would work a treat.

Plain short bread fingers, jam tarts.

Is there a speciality from where you originally came from - say the likes of Bath Buns or Eccles cakes.

Did you mean scones are out? If you did I have a nonfail recipe.

Or bread and butter pudding.

hows about GOOSNARGH CAKES (Caraway Shortbread)

225g unsalted butter
125g golden caster sugar
(plus extra for sprinkling)
350g plain flour
1/2 tsp ground coriander seeds
1 1/2 tsp caraway seeds

1. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

2. Sift flour over the creamed mix, add the coriander and caraway seeds, mix with wooden spoon until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

3. Using your hand work the mixture together to form a smooth-ish dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead it gently so that the dough is smooth and workable.

4. Roll out or press out flat-ish with your hands to about 1/4" thick  and  cut out the dough biscuits.

5. Lightly grease two baking sheets.  Put the biscuits onto the baking sheets, and mark all over with a fork if you wish. Sprinkle with caster sugar.

6. Put the baking sheets into the fridge and leave for as long as you can (at least 2 hours, preferably overnight).

7. Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.  (c160-170C if fan oven)

8. Bake the biscuits for 15-20 minutes until just turned golden brown – take care as they tend to 'turn' overdone quite suddenly.

9. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with more caster sugar or granulated.  Leave them to cool slightly for 10-15 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool fully.

Scones are out!!  Sorry I didn´t notice the typo.... also flapjacks-  my oats are too precious to use on flap jacks, I need them for my porrage in the mornings!  We have to drive to Gibralter to get the oats, a 3 hour there and back trip!

Can you get hold of marzipan?  If so what about a Simnel cake.  Its obviously not the right time of year, but its a real traditional UK cake that I don't think anyone else in the world makes  :)

Or if a whole sliced cake is too complicated to serve, I found you these http://www.ocado.com/webshop/recipe/simnel-cupcakes/3305 They look really pretty  :)

the list of things we cant get here:
Marzipan, currants, icing sugar (one shop has started to sell very small packets, VERY expensive, so make it with  granulated sugar in the liquidiser!) very dark brown sugar, suet, double cream (only long life 35% fat cream) Golden syrup, treacle, mixed spice.... lots of things that can go into cake making  :(

I am thinking of bread pudding and can I have the recipe for  the lemon cake please Chrissie?
