Planting cucumbers
« on: May 30, 2012, 09:54 »
I am about to plant out some cucumbers. I think that I have to plant them at the same level and not deep. Is this right?

I like to plant mine on slightly raised mound, with a 'moat' around it for watering into  ;)

yes at the same level or slightly above like MOS suggests - definately not deeper as this will cause the stem to rot  ;)

alot of people put a bottle next to the plant and water through that - so that the water goes straight to the roots and doesn't touch the stem  ;)

I can never understand how the cucumber plants they sell in GCs, all have such short stems.

Mine always get to about two inches tall with just seed leaves, although there never seems to be any bother - well most times that is...

The further north you are the truer that information is, given cucumber's tendency to die if not grown in the right conditions (the main one being constant warmth.)

Having said that, ridge cucumbers are intended to be grown outdoors because they need pollinating to set fruit (they usually have to be manually pollinated indoors but IMO they are not that much more robust than indoor varieties.)

Only one way to find out where you are.................... :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I have gone for 5 varieties this year, I expected to grow them all outside, have I made a big mistake?
The varieties are:

Sunsweet
Burpless
Long white
Parisienne pickling
Marketmore

I got 30 plants all together.

I wanted to try different varieties to see which performed the best, now I am wondering if I will get anything at all!

OK, I'm a LOT further south than you, but I've never had any problems growing cucumbers outside :)

We have grown Marketmore, an outdoor ridge variety, indoors for a few years in a row as we tried them outdoors at first and found them dying from the cold and rescued them.

They give a great crop! :D

They'll be fine but you'll be forever watering if the summer stays warm  ;)

And you may get an awful lot of cucumbers.   I've grown both Marketmore and Burpless just over the hill from you in the past and have found them both reliable and prolific  :)

Thanks for that guys, I am happy about that.
I have only had success with crystal apple before, and the wife wouldn't eat them, said they looked weird!
A farmer friend of mine once said that cucumbers were a bit like sheep, they spend all day working out new ways of killing themselves...
