Bean question
« on: May 29, 2012, 12:47 »
I have planted my beans in a traditional row growing up canes.
I am growing white lady runners plus cobra and blauhilde french beans all on the same row.
Should I have separated them or do they not get cross pollinated like sweetcorn?

Thanks
Elaine

They can get cross pollinated, some of mine have in the past, but the chances are very low.

The main problem would be if seed saving, but if they are just for eating it's not an issue.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Do the cross pollinated ones produce nice edible beans? Are they like runners or french?

I ended up with some purple runner beans that should have been "Enorma". They were short & tough.

You may end up with a good strain, I didn't. As I said, there's no problem until you try & grow them.

That could be bad news for me as I grew them together, up the same poles to be precise, and have saved and sown the seed.

As DD said, chances are low so go with it and see what you get.

Mainly they should be what you expect - mine were last year

Phew!
Thanks DD I was worried that I would end up with 22 plants with inedible beans.
Now they just need a little rain to help them up the canes!
