How many potatoes will one seed potato produce?

I know its a very ambigous question but if they are chitted, planted and earthed up correctly what would you normally expect the yield to be???

More of a "how long is a piece of string" question!

Early potatoes are grown more closely together and harvested early to get new potatoes (although you don't have to harvest them early.)

Main crop potatoes are grown for general cooking and also for storing so should produce a larger yield.

On top of that you've got the suitability of the soil and actual growing conditions.

If I had to guess I would say that small earlies should yield from around a pound per plant, main crops up to 5 pounds.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

And then there's the old adage about the number of chits you leave on each seed potato affecting the number and size of potatoes in your crop.  ::)

Which also affect the length of that undefinable piece of string.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

well each spud had 2-4 chits on them. The soil is virgin ground on the side plot of our house which has only ever been used for weeds  All weeds cleared and tons of stone removed!

In the same ground adjacent to the spuds the shallots and onion sets are going great guns  :D

How long would you say that they will take to sprout in this type of weather and do I water them or do I leave them to their own devices???

Spuds won't take long to come up. maybe a week to 2 weeks. give them plenty of water every day if possible as they are greedy. i grow main crop king Edward and desiree and from past experience my plants each produced 10-15 good sized tatties.

Same answer as JayG really. I don't measure yield in number of spuds but by weight. The first pick of Lady Christl this year gave 210g per seed after 10 weeks. Leave them for another 4 weeks and you're looking at 500g+ per seed. Leave em longer and you'll get more. My container grown Charlottes usually give 1 to 1.5 kg and maincrops 2kg+
