Tomato question,what does 'set' mean?
« on: May 27, 2012, 09:58 »
What exactly does it mean when it says 'when the truss has set'?
Someone who I suspect only knows slightly more than I do took the tops off my Gardeners Delight's yesterday after telling me they had enough trusses on them.
They are roughly 2ft high and he's nipped them off at the top of the fourth truss(branch ???)
Does this sound ok?
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

A truss has set when all (or nearly all) of the flowers have successfully and visibly started to turn into tomatoes.

The idea behind limiting the number of trusses is to make sure that they all develop and ripen properly before the end of summer - how many trusses that can or should be depends partly on the variety, but also the weather, and how early they were started.

I'm not familiar with GD but I would think that at 2' and 4 trusses before the end of May it may be a bit premature to be stopping them, but others with more experience of this variety may say that 4 trusses is about the maximum for them...........
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Don't let him near them again, is my advice

If you actually had four flower trusses (different to branches) the plants would be about 4ft tall and you'd probably have been eating ripe tomatoes from the bottom trusses by now  ::)

My GD grow to 6ft with loads of trusses.  As they are a small tomato, you need more than 4 trusses.  Goodness, why can't people leave other people's stuff alone unless asked to do so?

I nearly killed OH the other year when he decided to take the 'side shoots' off my GD.  He took the main stem too and they ended up like bush tomatoes!
