Peas
« on: May 25, 2012, 09:34 »
I have been watching the Chelsea flower show on BBC and spotted a good idea for planting peas.  I have a section in my garden where this would work.  However I am not sure if it is too late to sow seeds now.  Can anyone advise.  I am a real novice at veggie growing and joined this website after seeing how much help is given to your fellow gardeners.

I have yet to sow my peas (but very soon!) so to answer the question, yes, there's still time  ;)

To save on disappointment, could you give an inkling of what the idea is as well - I have visions of you planning an archway with peas growing up the sides, in which case, you'd need a tall pea variety rather than a standard one most people grow.  Just a thought  :)

Hi and welcome!  I'm a newbie around here too and will agree with the previous posters.  I've planted a couple rows of peas so far and plan to stagger the planting of several more rows in the hope I have peas ready to pick at different times.  I hope it works or I'll have a major abundance of peas!!
Add me on PSN but nowadays I reach for the fork or hoe more than a controller

Thanks for the help.  I saw an area that had several fancy arch type trellis (not sure how to describe them)  they were about 3feet tall and the peas were groing up them.  I have a small fence which is about 2feet high and thought that I could get something similar and plant peas to grow up them.

The main risk with sowing this late is that you may get mildew and/or pea moth.

But it's worth a try.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
