Garlic failure help appreciated please!
« on: May 23, 2012, 17:36 »
Hi

I planted my garlic last October and have been really pleased as its been coming along nicely. Last night however I discovered 3 dead plants all withered and rotted. I dug them up and discovered red marks on the leaves. It's as if something has burrowed into the leaves. I'll post a pic as soon as I can but any initial thoughts?

Also as it hasn't really stopped raining up here since the end of March could it be just too damp?

Thanks
G

My garlic has speckled orange rust spots on the leaves and the one I had  little peep at didn't seem to have any cloves in the bulb. :(

Hope someone comes along with the answer for us both.

i am sure someone will be able  to help. ;)

Don't know about the original problem, but rust is common place and does not affect the bulb quality.

Give the bulb time to "clove".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think it's too early to expect cloves in the bulb - that's the last thing that happens.

It could well be rust.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks

Looked it up. Will cut off any leaves that are 'rusty' and keep an eye on my leeks and onions. No planting them on that area from now on!

Thanks again

Is it too early for allium leaf miner to be 'eating' the OPs garlic?

Not too early according to the RHS

Depending on the variety it may not bulb up until June/July.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.
